The number of children admitted to hospital with burns from heaters and hot drinks has surged, prompting doctors to urge parents to be more vigilant. Doctors at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead report the number of children burning themselves on barbecues rose by 40 per cent from 2006 to last year, and burns from hotplates and car exhaust pipes rose by 33 per cent.

Hot temps, playground equipment pose burn threat

DALLAS – Sidewalks can heat up to more than 160 degrees in seconds, which can lead to serious burns for children on a playground. It’s a problem some doctors say is on the rise. Dalton Reed and Michael Adams arrived at a North Texas playground Sunday to find themselves confined to climbing ropes since the slides, swings, steel and plastic surfaces were all too hot.

Tips for Parents

1. Keep children away from flames and other sources of heat
2. Teach children to never play with matchers and lighters (Matches and lighters should always be kept up high, out of reach of children.)
3. Teach children about Stop-drop-and roll, parents should practice this technique with children
4. Call 911 in case of an emergency
