Summer means joy and freedom even for those of us who are well past our school years. But summer bristles with risks — especially for young people. Youthful innocence, inexperience and the thrill of taking chances can add up to serious injury or worse.

BBC Health: Head Injuries

What is it?
A head injury is any sort of accident or trauma that affects the head. Most worrying is the risk of brain damage. Most worrying is the risk of brain damage; cuts or haemorrhages in the brain tissues and covering membranes can lead to a wide variety of problems. Other concerns include damage to the spinal cord (head injuries often involve the neck, too), sight and hearing, as well as possible harm involving the major airways. Because all these important structures are found in the head, head injuries can take a huge toll. They are the major cause of disability following an accident.

Tips for Parents

1. Watch children when playing on the playground or other objects they could suddenly fall from
2. Don’t allow children to climb on high structures or toys with slippery slopes
3. Teach children proper use of toys that could bring damage to the head if misused such as headphone usage.
4. Call 911 in case of an emergency
